Diet & Health

The 2017 food theme census identifies more than 32 researchers across the university are engaged in intense activity related to understanding and preventing obesity, both in children and adults. Our researchers have produced more than 33 successful research projects over the last 5 years, within a total internal (participant) income of more than 5M£, supported by different private (industry) and public funders, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the Medical Research Council (MRC), the National Institute for Health Research, or the World Cancer Research Fund, and the European Union (EU) among others.

Our researchers and clinicians, experts in the effect of nutrition on human physical and mental health, dietary tools development, consumer and eating behaviour, human appetite regulation, development of healthier foods with enhanced functionality and improved nutritional profile (less sugar and fat content) to prevent obesity and cognitive decline, are working together with industry and stakeholders to address the challenge and provide healthy and sustainable diets for all sectors of the population.

Further strengths are the Nutritional Epidemiology group which is a founding member of the Interdisciplinary Centre in Obesity, Nutrition and Health (ICON-Health). A number of Leeds academics are members of the ESRC obesity network ( and the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics hosts the Obesity Strategic Network ( and the Consumer Data Research Centre ( which has access to national food purchase data, a valuable resource for research on diet and health.
